Garden Plans > 2011: Madeleine & Brendan's garden

About this Garden Plan

On the Atlantic Coast with torrential storms, winds any time of year and temperatures sometimes over 40 degrees centigrade. However, it is sub-tropical and average summer temperature is supposed to be in the 20s. Hardly ever get frosts and NEVER get snow. Situated in the Muros-Noia Rias with a microclimate generally mild with good quantity of rain except this year has been the hottest dryest spring in 50 years. Lots of challenges but hope that good soil improvement with composting, campanion planting and growing plenty of hedge plants and shade giving fruit trees will help the less heat-hardy plants to survive. This is our third summer and the whole garden had been swamped with couch grass and rubbish of all types. Still fighting the couch grass but getting some lovely crops - particularly the strawberries this year.

Plan Type, Soil and Location

Garden Location: Galicia, North West Spain
Garden Size: 88' 6" x 39' 3"
Garden Type: Home garden
Garden Layout: Raised Beds
Sun or Shade: Sunny
Garden Soil Type: Light / Sandy soil

Plan Notes

squash self-seeded and not sure whether it's a pumpkin, butternut or courgette - don't want pumpkins ever again as butternut is far superior in every way and stores extremely well. Once itg is clear what these plants are we can decide whether to keep them, move them or compost them. Flowers are marigolds as companion plants and fruit bush is loganberry as a prickly hedge and edible wind-break.
