Plan Notes

On October 21, 2012, I put box one and two to bed for winter. Put layers of newspaper, thick layer of straw, then a garden blanket over held down with two-by-fours and brick. It was a sunny day and around 70. Add Summer Savory plants with sweet potatoes and onions March 17, 2013 started the seeds. March 30 thinned out some and started a few new tomato seeds because the others were leggy. I think that I need to put them under light sooner. Now I just put it under the lamp from the get go. We'll see. I also put out four seedling with tiny true leaves - red lettuce--in the greenhouse to see if I can start my lettuce early. March 30, 2013 about 55 degrees. I uncovered all five boxes. Leaves and straw had not decomposed much but the newspaper had -some. April 5, 2013 Uncovered one row. Next year get the leaves cut up. Otherwise I will have leaves floating in the wind. April 6: worked cow manure into third of the long box on east end. Planted spinach, one row of it. Saw lots of worms. Nice. April 7 - want to start Cilantro, parsley and Borage in planters and lettuce in long box. April 8: Moved my plants to greenhouse. Transplanted fennel and red leaves lettuce. This night, I left light and heating mat on bc temps were going to 41 degrees and this being the first night out of the house. April 10: Started Green Romaine/COS Parris Island April 27: Beautiful day. 70s. Boxes one and two were fertilized with manure and dirt loosened. Planted Onion, Copra in box two. Planted lettuce and some carrots. Covered them the next day bc an animal got into the lettuce. Planted Nasturtium. The Borage, parsley and cilanto are not coming up yet. I uncovered some green sprouts and will give them a few more days. The tomatoes, peppers, and all that was in greenhouse is now out. Forecast looks good with no lower that mid to high forties at night.

Marigold 57"7" x 7"
Nasturtium 511"11" x 11"Mix a light application of a balanced organic fertilizer into the soil prior to planting. Ø Nasturtium is another annual, in this case a trailing vine, that keeps away Colorado potato bugs, squash bugs, and whiteflies. SOWING: Outdoors (recommended) - 2 weeks before last frost. It also says to grow it under fruit trees (bushes). To get a faster sprout soak your seeds (they are large and pretty hard) in some warm water overnight and then place directly in the garden or pots where you want to grow them. Nasturtiums are annuals so plant the seeds in spring when the danger of frost has passed.
