Goals this year: + Continue planting what worked well. UPDATE: What has worked continues to work. What hasn't (Broccoli and Brussel sprouts, Beans) continue to not work. + Continue experimenting (e.g. co planting/ companion planting/ beneficial pairing "Three sisters"> Corn + Squash +Beans) + Continue adding the date of expected harvest on Vegetable Labels using a Paint Pen. UPDATE: Was hard to track. Make this more important than plant date. X -> Start succession planting on end of Feb or March 1st (at least 4 weeks before our April 1st frost date) -> Start having 3 season garden (Spring > Summer > Fall) -> Start growing my own starts (so I have 100% germination in garden) in Feb UPDATE: Not worth the time and headache. Buy from Tomato guy at market. X> Start few different varieties (e.g beets, tomatoes, ) for each vegetable to extend harvest simply by growing both early and late maturing varietals. X -> Start growing different types of tomatoes (cherry, paste, slicer) to extend your tomato harvest from early in summer well into warm fall days. UPDATE: Loved have different types but planted too many plants. I will do 3-4, not 6 next year. X-> Start having Laura check every week to harvest. UPDATE: This helped especially on sunflower bloomed and when tomatos were too big and falling over. Also, great to assess if olives were growing/getting water X-> Start using radial sprinklers, not drip for flower beds -> Start researching clues when to harvest X-> Start having 3 types of Tomatoes (Slicers: Heirlooms; Paste: San Marzonos; Cherry: ?) - Stop chopping up yams/sweet potatoes and trying to plant. - Stop having barren land. Always have something planted (like carrots in any space possible) ? Why aren't sweet potatoes starters allowed to be shipped to CA? ANSWER: Most nurseries in other states cannot ship slips to California because of pest quarantine regulations. Some exceptions: Call Jim Alvernaz (209-756-6970) in early May who grows: Murasaki, Bonita, Covington and Diane. Or Sand Hill Preservation Center (phone 563-246-2299) in Calamus, Iowa. Visit www.sandhillpreservation.com to read their variety catalog and growing tips. The center ships slips by ground delivery from late May to mid-July. Winners Yellow tomatos (? Croatia " " (pink) Basil esp at 446. Pop corn. Marigolds protecting Kale (But don't eat) Potatoes Wild Flowers- biggest hit Sunflowers- but stagger planting every 2-3 weeks for continous blooms. 2021-07-07 * Heat lettuce was tired and too bitter. Apparently Hard to grow. Tasted too bitter- oozed gooze when cut, and side shoots show that it is tired. * Olive Trees in driveway showing new growth. Found battery 9V was out of power :( Not sure how long it was w/out water. Replaced it and watered for 55 mins. Pushed water meter into it and was very Moist. So far 2 along drive way are dead and removed. 1 on boarder line. Chemali have set olives. About 2-3 Olive Trees are actively growing. ---------------- For olives need, 10x10x10 or more * Grow More 20-20-20 Fertilizer * Fruit trees might be longer No 10x3; most is fruit citrus; ------------------------ > Steve Solomon's (Territorial Seeds) Slow Release Organic Fertilizer Recipe Ingredients * 4 parts soybean (cottonseed, linseed, etc) meal (e.g. 50 pounds)- OSH doesn't have it. Amazon has 50 bls Down to Earth Bag Cottonseed (6-2-1) for $92 OR CottonSead Meal from Earthworks Health 50lbs for $70 * 1/2 part phosphate (e.g. 6.25 pounds rock phosphate or bone meal)- Down to Earth has Rock Phosphate (0-3-0 5lbs for $19); Down to Earth Bone Meal (3-15-0s for ; 5lb) * 1/2 part lime (e.g. 6.25 pounds, ideally 1/2 dolomitic and 1/2 agricultural lime)- EB Stone; * 1/2 part kelp meal (e.g. 6.25 pounds — it’s a bonus ingredient, but we always add it)- EB Stone; 3lbs. Steps 1. Mix all ingredients very well on a tarp or rodent-proof large container using a shovel. Note: Recipe doesn't need to be exact. 2. For direct sown crops, sprinkle on top of the soil before a good rain and after the seedlings have emerged and established. For transplants, use approximately 1/4 cup in every transplant hole. We mix it together with the loosened soil so it is in the surrounding root zone of the transplant. During growing season, occasionally top dress plants part way through the growing season, crops like tomatoes, peppers, and perhaps our onions and garlic. But by and large, the only addition of fertilizer is this one time at transplant.
