Plan Notes

2013 Garden Journal Lost all the strawberry plants I planted last year. Lost 1 rhubarb plant, and the big artichoke plants. However, have 3 baby artichoke plants restarting. 3/16Bought a cheap $49. Greenhouse and 8 x 30 blow up pool $40. from Big Lots. 3/17Bella helped me build the greenhouse. Then we planted : 6 pk eggplant, 2 - 4 green onion, 1 -4 parsley, 1 -4 catnip, 2 -4 cilantro, 2 -4 sweet basil, 2 4 chives, 6 pk bibb lettuce, 6 pk mesclun lettuce, 6 pk beef steak tomatoes, 6 pk roma tomatoes, 6 pk bell peppers, 6 pk jalapeno peppers, 9 - 4 broccoli, 6 -4 cabbage, 12-4 marigolds, 3-4 larkspur, 2 -4 sea shell cosmos, 2 -4 bright cosmos, 1 -4 tritoma, 2 -4 Shasta Daisy and put all in the greenhouse. 3/18I planted 25 peat pots zinnias, 18 peat pills snapdragons (from Pac St), 18 peat pills poppies, 20 peat pills morning glories, 11 peat pills moon flowers. Put them in the green house and added a grow light on timer from 8pm til 12am. 3/23 both lettuces, cilantro, and green onions started to sprout. 3/26Cleaned pond filters. Photographed and counted all koi (still 32), then divided into the pool and large pond. 3/27Took Jeff, Andrea, & Bella to Daffodil Hill, then came home and mowed the lawns. 3/28Planted one of the fig tree starts out by the rv cover, the planted 2 rosemary starts by pomegranate tree. 3/29Gathered 2x6 wood from around yard to build 3+ more raised beds. 3/30 put up a make shift sun shade for pool pond. Cleared away straw from roses and fed them. Raked leaves from garden paths. Drained small pond, cleaned and refilled, covered with netting. Had thunder boomers in the East. 3/31Rain and lightning all night. Catnip, 1 eggplant, sweet basil, 2 beefsteak, 3 roma, marigolds, zinnias, cabbage have sprouted. 3 red tulips that Bella planted bloomed. Moved pink ribbon jasmine, and 2 - 6 pks I found in the garden from last year one had a white iris seed sprouting, the other has two mystery sprouts into the greenhouse. 4/2weeded & rototilled front yard planter then planted the left over tulip bulbs. Scattered Larkspur, poppy, snap dragon and wild flower mix over the soil. Also, planted 2 daylilies bought at last years master gardeners sale under liquid amber tree. 4/5 Bought 8 bags of garden soil from Home Depot for $20.00. Also bought cherry tomato and yellow pear tomato and 2 6 pks petunias. Put in green house. 4/6Went to Green Acres and used. $25.00 gift card from Pac Street to buy 5 - 6pks of Sequoia and quinalt strawberries, pineapple, and green zebra tomato plants and 6 red potato seeds, Then went to PetSmart and bought 4 - 4-5 koi for $36.00. 1 Armor scale ki kujaku standard fin, 1 Yamato nishiki butterfly, 1 lemon hariwake butterfly, 1 chigoi butterfly. Came home floated the fish in isolation pond, put plants in green house, then finished putting up the shade shelter for ponds. John brought home more pallets so I put them in the garden. Set up ten new solar lights I bought at Big Lots for $2.00 a piece, then clean up a bit.. All was going well until I broke my ankle on April 21, then the garden was put on the backburner as I was on total bed rest for the first 3 weeks. After I was put in a hard cast and got a walker I would make it out to the garden and sit a bit but couldnt get around in there. Very depressing. 5/9Spent $112. at the Master Gardeners Spring Sale with the help of Bella we bought several flowering quince, 3 berry bushes, some strawberries, and an iris. John put them all in the garden under the drip system till Im ready to plant them. 6/23Disaster averted, went out to feed koi it seems that the barley hay I had put in to help with algae blocked the out flow and emptied the pool. Fortunately there was about an inch of water left. I transferred all koi to the two smaller ponds, and refilled the pool pond. 6/26The figs are huge. Should be ready any day now. Cut up some aluminum pans and made strips to hang in tree along with cds to scare the birds away. 7/2Bought 25 2-3cull koi from BKD on ebay and put them in pool with others. 7/31Changed filter in koi pool still having trouble controlling the algae.
